Sooo... Thinking about buying a car...

For my travels through Africa after my civil service I am thinking about buying a car.

Pros
No problem with luggage
Freedom: stop wherever, maybe sleep in the car if push comes to shove…
Mobility, already now for weekend trips. If you have to use public transport you just have to calculate so much more time.
Cons
Maybe less interaction with locals during my trip than if I would use public transportation and hitch-hiking
Less intense experience. If you don't have a car you can also take a boat on a river for some part, or a cargo train.
Car breaks down… I have no knowledge what-so-ever…
Risk of car theft. A tip I read in a travel blog a couple weeks ago said to park it next to a bank and slip the guard a couple of dollars to sit next to it all night…
